Seeing Green: Travel Green Certification

We are Travel Green Wisconsin certified! What does that mean? The Department of Tourism initiated Travel Green Wisconsin in 2006 to encourage businesses to promote smart, environmentally friendly business practices. According to Travel Wisconsin, the program is the “first of its kind state-sponsored sustainable travel green certification in the nation and has become a model for sustainable travel efforts both nationally and internationally.”

Travel-Green-WI-Logo-smTo become certified with Travel Green Wisconsin, LGCT worked their way through an application that had certain requirements for the property. There are nine categories and a business must “earn points” in to be considered. Baseline performance is collected for the amount of energy, fuel, water, and solid waste the business consumed during the last calendar year. This allows the applicant to measure their improvements. Applicants commit to sustainable green business practices found within the Travel Green Wisconsin application. A minimum of 35 points is required.

The green categories include:

• Communication and Education (Customers, Employees, Public)

• Waste Reduction, Reuse, and Recycling

• Energy Efficiency, Conservation, and Management

• Water Conservation and Wastewater Management

• Air Quality

• Wildlife and Landscape Conservation and Management

• Transportation

• Purchasing

• Local Community Benefits

LGCT earned its certification in 2013. When the trails were being built on the 100-acre property, there were done with sustainability and environmental stewardship. A variety of species of trees and wildlife can be found on the trails and LGCT is dedicated to preserving them. The property was built on the site of a reclaimed quarry of non-metallic mining facility. Read all of Canopy Tours green initiatives here.

“This certification means a lot to us. Given that Lake Geneva Canopy Tours is an environmentally anchored business, it’s critical that our business practices tread lightly,” said General Manager at Lake Geneva Canopy Tours Eric Wood. “Not only do we want to give our customers the best zip line experience possible, we also want to protect the environment they’re literally soaring through.”
